These inexpensive collars, placed around each rosebush and filled with soil, will remain frozen all winter, keeping the bud union and the lower parts of the canes evenly cold and safe from winter wind. The top parts of the canes should be left unpruned. These collars are easy to make!

Photo 1: Open 4 sheets of regular-size newspaper-- not tabloid size-- and stack them on top of each other.

...

...

Photo 2: Fold the stack the opposite way, from top to bottom. Consider this a "component" of your newspaper collar.

...

...

Photo 3: Make another component and get the cat to help.

...

...

Photo 4: Fit the short sides of the two components together, overlapping by about 2 inches.

...

...

Photo 5: Staple the two components together using several staples along the length of the overlap.

This (approx) 6-ft. strip, consisting of two components, will encircle the base of most rose plants, but for really huge roses, you may have to add another component.

Photo 6: Stand the collar on it's edge, loose edges on the ground, folded edge at the top, and encircle the base of the plant. Overlap the edges, and staple them together. Itıs a little awkward, but staple along the entire length of the overlap.

We took these photos in early fall, but by the time you apply winter protection for real, the plants will have lost many of their leaves. Before you apply the collar, gently remove any leaves that remain at the base of the canes.

...

...

Photo 7: Once the ends of the collar are securely fastened together, shovel soil into the collar. The soil will surround the canes as it is added. Fill the collar to the top.

Again, most of the leaves will have fallen off the plant, making it easier to shovel the soil into the collar.

Don't use soil from the rosebed as this will compromise the roots of the plants. Instead, bring in additional soil from another part of the garden. You can put it back in the spring, or use it to topdress your rosebeds.

Photo 8: Mound the soil as high as possible. Voila! Your rose is protected!
