pH Testing Tape
pH is one of the most important factors in successful growing. Soils in the low pH range cause phosphates to become insoluble and trace elements to be locked up, and no amount of fertilizer will correct the fertility of the soil until the pH condition is properly adjusted. Just press a small piece of pH testing tape into moist soil (or wet with distilled water) and compare the color of the tape with the chart on the dispenser to determine how much your soil's pH needs to be adjusted. Includes list of common plants and their pH preferences and a soil treatment chart.

Sometimes, in our eagerness to get our gardens planted, we've been guilty of not properly preparing the soil. When you've got 20 fat-caned new rosebushes just quivering to grow, it's kind of hard to keep them soaking an extra day or two while you double-dig a bed and add the necessary amendments.

Proper soil preparation, however, really can make the difference between a thriving rosebed and one that just seems to malinger along.

So we urge you to take that little bit of extra time and plan your bed and amend the soil properly.
